WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology:

Weather conditions:

Ice covered approximately 60% of the surface of large lakes on 28 June. Rivers were free of ice at this time, and snow remained in ravines and on steep slopes of watersheds. Snow melted almost completely and ice reduced to 30% of the surface of large lakes by 16 July. Weather was warm and dry in the period of studies, with air temperatures reaching +22.5øC and rain occurring on 2 days only. Four days were calm, while moderate to strong winds of prevailing northern direction occurred on other days.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

high

Breeding conditions:

Among breeding geese White-fronted Geese prevailed, while Bean Geese were less common. Two nests of the former species found on 7 July contained 3 and 5 eggs, while nest and brood of the latter found on the same day contained 2 eggs and 3 downy chicks, respectively. Breeding ducks were represented by Greater Scaup and Long-tailed Duck.
11 nests of Rough-legged Buzzard were found in the surveyed area, containing 3-5 eggs. Chicks hatched in all nests in the period from 8-14 July. Among waders breeding was confirmed for Grey and Golden plovers, Red-necked Phalarope, Little Stint, Dunlin and Ruff.
Long-tailed and Arctic skuas were numerous breeders in the area, and behaved agressively towards researchers and the dog. Two found nests of two species contained two eggs each, and hatching occurred on 13 July in the nest of Arctic Skua.
Herring Gulls (L. heuglini) and Arctic Terns bred. Shorelark, Red-throated Pipit, Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Common Redpoll, Pallas's Reed, Little and Lapland Buntings were breeding passerines.

Rodent dynamics:

Rodent numbers were high. Siberian Lemmings were seen several times daily, they prevailed in catches of domestic dog, and their burrows were found both in wet and dry habitats. The dog also captured two Narrow-skulled Voles, which were rarely seen.

Rodent species recorded:

LatinAbundance
Lemmus sibiricusabundant
Microtus gregaliscommon

Summary of fauna studies:

Bird counts in different habitats were conducted in a framework of Inventory of animals of the Tazovsky district of Yamalo-Nenetsky Okrug by Reseach Center on Biodiversity Conservation of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.
